Stonehenge setback
Plans to improve visitor facilities at one of the UK’s top World Heritage Sites have been put on hold after the new government cut £10m of funding for improvements at the prehistoric monument.
The £27.5m Stonehenge Environmental Improvement Project aims to “restore a sense of dignity to the monument’s setting and to improve the inadequate visitor facilities”. The project included plans to close the busy A-road next to the site and create a visitor centre.
Considered to be one of the most significant examples of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments, Stonehenge attracts tourists from around the world. As the planning process is nearly complete, the organisation plans to raise money from private sources in order to complete the final stages of the development.
