Shetland becomes Geopark

Shetland has been awarded European Geopark status because of its outstanding geological heritage and the way it utilises this to generate economic benefits for the area. The Shetland Amenity Trust has been working hard to promote the unique geology of Shetland, which has the most amazing diversity of landscape in an area of its size. There are areas where you can discover mountains eroding and forming, tropical seas, ancient rivers, volcanoes and deserts. It is now hoped that the Geopark status will raise Shetland’s profile to an international level, promoting conservation and awareness of the islands’ rich heritage.
