Medieval makeover at Tretower Court

Tretower Court, a medieval fortified manor house in Wales, has recently been restored to its former glory. Following the completion of a two-year restoration project by CADW, the Welsh Assembly Government’s historic environment service, the house is now open to the public. Transformed, under the watchful eyes of numerous stakeholders and building and conservation specialists, the house now looks as it would have around 450 years ago, when the Vaughans of Tretower lived here.

A state-of-the-art audio tour will lead visitors back in time to witness the preparations for a feast in 1471, seen through the eyes of two young servants. Every aspect of medieval life has been recreated down to the last detail. “It will be possible to prepare a real medieval banquet here,” said Charles Kightly, the 15th-century historian who has carefully commissioned replica items and furnishings.
