Kensington Palace receives £1million lottery grant

Kensington Palace has been awarded £1 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in order to finance plans to create an exciting and educational visitor experience. “Welcome to Kensington – a palace for everyone” is a £12 million project due to be completed by 2012. It will allow visitors to the Grade I listed property greater access to the many historic treasures inside. The plans also include new public gardens inspired by the original layout of the area, linking the palace with the park nearby.

Sir Trevor McDonald, a trustee of Historic Royal Palaces who manage the site, expressed his delight about the funding, which will see the palace transformed in time for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. The building works are now due to get underway in June 2010.
