Inspirational building saved

English Heritage has declared its support for plans to safeguard the Cleveland Street Workhouse, which is thought to have inspired Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. Built in the 1770s, the unique Georgian building is threatened with demolition, but protesters, including Dickens’ great, great granddaughter, Lucinda Dickens-Hawksley, are keen to see the building Grade I listed.
