Ice Age comes to Derbyshire
Britain’s first national centre for the Ice Age has been opened in rural north east Derbyshire. Sir David Attenborough opened the £4.2 million visitor centre at Creswell Crags in June. The complex overlooks the limestone gorge, the world’s most northerly outpost of Ice Age man, and the honeycomb of caves at Creswell is internationally recognised as being home to Britain’s only known cave art.
The new centre will house permanent and travelling exhibitions, featuring some of the most remarkable Ice Age artefacts ever found, as well as loans from the British museum and the National History Museum. It provides a focal place for visitors to learn more about our early ancestors and the Ice Age.
The new visitor centre will also offer tours of the caves, featuring the unique cave art, state-of-the-art exhibition displays, as well as a café that boasts floor to ceiling panoramic views across the gorge. There are also peaceful areas to enjoy lakeside walks and picnics. For more details about the site, visit www.creswell-crags.org.uk
