Famous Brueghel painting at Nostell Priory

A painting by Pieter Brueghel the Younger entitled The Procession to Calvary will be back on display after being saved for the nation. The painting has been part of the furnishings for 200 years at Nostell Priory, the 18th-century home of the Winn family in West Yorkshire. However, the property’s owner decided to put the painting up for sale in order to help cover the costs of the estate’s restoration work.

After much campaigning, the National Trust and the Art Fund have managed to raise enough money to secure the painting.

Stephen Deuchar, Director of the Art Fund said: “We have been bowled over by the support and enthusiasm of the public for this quite extraordinary painting, helping us to reach the £2.7 million target.” The painting is due to be back in place at Nostell Priory by the end of February.
