Campaign launched to keep journal of naval pioneer
The British Library is seeking support to help it purchase a rare manuscript that is an important part of our seafaring history. The previously unknown journal of British naval pioneer, Sir John Narbrough has had a temporary export bar placed upon it by the Culture Minister, giving the Library a chance to secure it if it can raise the necessary £310,000.
On his voyage in 1669-71, Narbrough became the first British sailor to navigate the Strait of Magellan from west to east, making trade in the Pacific possible. His journal has direct importance for English map-making as his detailed descriptions of the Straits provided the basis for British charts until the time of Captain Cook. If secured, this unique and rare piece of heritage will be available for academics and the general public.
